E.J. McKenna lives in Melbourne, Australia with her husband and young son.
She has worked as an award winning journalist, market researcher, waitress, website creator, accounts manager and company director.
In high school McKenna excelled in English and Literature, earning herself a place in the journalism course at Melbourne's RMIT University. 1,500 tried to get in, 50 made it.
In the 1990s she worked as a journalist on many leading Melbourne newspapers. She won many awards - including scooping first and second place in the one night for best news report. By day she wrote other people's stories, but by night she plotted epic adventures. Over the years many of those novels have been completed, spanning the Young Adult, Sci-Fi, Thriller & Romance genres.
Now she runs a television post-production company with her husband, and writes for numerous commercial websites.
Inspiration
A huge influence was British humorist and author Frank Muir. For sixteen years E.J. and Frank swapped letters filled with family anecdotes and stories. When it came to exchanging gifts, he sent his published books, she sent hand-written essays. They later met face to face in 1995, when McKenna travelled to the UK, and dined at The Groucho Club in London. While there, one of her other literary heroes, Douglas Adams, was pitching "something rather exciting and complicated to a couple of suits at the next table."
Favourite things
She loves gadgets and anything futuristic. Doctor Who and The Goodies have always been tv treats. A weekly trivia night at the local pub allows her to show off her knowledge of 1980s pop music. Coffee & chocolate are her worst vices. Reading to her son at bedtime is a joy. |
